Ups & Downs

We've been told by those with NICU experience that there are always good days and bad. Yesterday Lucas made it over a huge hurdle by coming off ECMO but since has had some set backs. The pneumothorax they thought had resolved has reappeared now that he's using his lungs. To help heal the problem, doctors replaced both chest tubes and changed the ventilator. He's also having some trouble with his kidneys and regulating his blood pressure (a lot of which has to do with coming off ECMO) and the doctors are working out the kinks to find the right balance of medications. We feel for our little guy and know how uncomfortable it must be to have procedure after procedure. The last couple days have been a roller coaster (emotional, medical and physical) and we're hoping the days to come are more relaxed so he can rest and heal.
